Soneva Fushi – A barefoot luxury family resort in the Maldives

January 2016

Soneva Fushi is a short sea-plane ride from Male International Airport.  Our seaplane was met by Soneva’s speedboat and once aboard we were given lovely cool watermelon juice in a cute little bottle and a cloth bag for our shoes.

The shoes stayed in that bag for our entire visit as the saying at Soneva is “No news, no shoes”, this resort is rustic barefoot luxury.

We booked a 3 bedroom, two-storey pool villa which was extremely impressive and situated on a beautiful stretch of beach with powdery white sand and calm, azure water.   The villa was eco-friendly yet luxurious and our private pool had a gorgeous sunken lounge attached and a shallow wading pool for little ones.  My 9 yr old had a bedroom by himself with an ensuite which he felt so grown up having! The small bed in our huge bedroom was perfectly positioned for our 3 yr old, in fact the whole villa was set up exactly right for a family of 4 children who are the age of mine.  We were amazed the villa had its own kitchen and study, both which we didn’t need to use but it gives you an idea of the scale of the villa! Very impressive!  The most stunning feature of our villa was an open air bathroom with waterfall and sunken bath all surrounded by shallow water with large stepping stones through the water leading to the beautifully private outdoor shower.

PARENTS TAKE NOTE:

Soneva Fushi has the best kids club we have seen anywhere in the world (and we have seen many) and it has to be seen to be believed. We marvelled at the fantastic pool with long waterslide, toddler wading area and a swim up bar for the children! The kids club had a dedicated room just for lego and a music room complete with drum kit and DJ turntables. We loved the musical in-floor piano that you step on the keys and it makes music and also fibre-optic lights in the ceiling light up in time, very cool! There was a cosy sleeping room and also a library and a cinema room with comfy loungers throughout.

At Soneva Fushi kids club also included banana boat riding at certain times which was great because other resorts charge for this fun activity (we have never seen it included free of charge anywhere in the world and kids ALWAYS want a turn on this). The staff were very good, enthusiastic and really attentive and involved with the kids (which doesn’t happen very often in resort kids clubs).

The outdoor cinema was fantastic and the children watched a movie one night with a child-friendly dinner buffet right next to it. This allowed us parents to have a separate dinner without the children which is nice every now and then.

The food at Soneva was really really impressive,  the inclusive lunch buffet had so much variety it was incredible, and so many healthy food options (and fantastic vegetarian options for me)! There was a fresh pizza making area with a chef and also a pasta bar which my sons loved and they ordered fresh penne every lunch.  Dinners didn’t disappoint either with an incredible buffet one night and another night we had a wonderful progressive dinner where each course was devoured in a different restaurant.  The dining highlight for us was eating by candlelight at the round table at the top of Fresh in the Garden restaurant that felt like a beautiful treehouse. The ingredients are grown in the organic gardens below the restaurant and then handpicked, cooked and delivered on your plate – the dishes are bursting with flavour due to how fresh the ingredients are.

We enjoyed watching and learning at the glass blowing factory (the only one in the Maldives) and we were treated to champagne and nibbles whilst we watched the men in action blowing glass and explaining the process as they did so, it was really fascinating.

The most attractive thing about this resort for my children, however, was the gelato room which served complimentary gelato all day long! There was about 30 flavours and as long as the kids ate their breakfast they could go straight to the gelato room! Chocolate lovers take note: There is also a chocolate room serving a huge array of desserts and chocolate delicacies complimentary all day as well.

We booked a private sunrise sandbank champagne breakfast which I’ll admit was a bit nerve-wrecking getting into a speedboat in pitch dark at 5.30am and heading off into the night!  Of course the timing was perfect as as soon as we arrived at our private breakfast, the champagne was poured and the sun slowly stated to emerge on the horizon.

We also really loved the private family beach picnic. We decided to leave the young boys at home as they were enjoying themselves immensely in the kids club and we knew they were in great hands with the fabulous kids club staff. The day began with us being whisked away by a private speedboat to a stunning deserted island not far away.  We were blown away with the set up on arrival to the secluded and breath taking beach. There were four sunloungers set up under umbrellas and 4 gorgeous trays with cushions to sit on to eat lunch. We snorkelled the beautiful waters while lunch was cooked underground by 3 chefs and were again surprised to see that there was a salad buffet of incredible variety set up just for us! We felt totally spoiled and we thank Soneva Fushi so much for that day where incredible memories were made. We highly recommend you book this tour when visiting Soneva Fushi.

We had a look at the day spa which was set up with very unique treatment rooms. Some were open air and others were in a cooled room with a glass ceiling and water trickling down all the walls – it was absolutely amazing and would be so relaxing to listen to during your treatment.

Hard as it was, we dragged ourselves away from our amazing villa to explore the island.  Along the way I snorkelled with my son around the Bara-Bara area which was great, there was alot of large colourful fish and beautiful warm, clear water.  There is a lovely bar in this spot, of the same name, and there are hammocks over the water that make the perfect place to watch the sun go down, drink in hand.

We had a look at Soneva in Aqua which is luxury to the extreme! It is Soneva Fushi’s new luxury yacht.  It has an all leather interior with secret floor that moves out of the way under the bed to reveal a glass bottomed jacuzzi – in the master bedroom! There’s another jacuzzi on the main deck perfectly positioned to watch an outdoor movie under the stars with a roll down screen! There is an office with an iMac concealed in the leather desk so you can mix business with pleasure.  The yacht was over the top amazing with plenty of “oos” and “ahhs” at every turn so go on the tour of the boat if you get the chance or even better book a few days on it to island hop.

The whole resort felt like a jungle adventure with luxurious tree-house living and was so much fun for all of us. We will definitely be back to Soneva Fushi as it ticks all the boxes for a family that like to experience adventure travel in luxury.

  1. Absolutely love this post. It sounds like such a thoughtfully designed resort – love the concept of bare feet – no slippers! I lived in Maldives last year but am yet to go to a resort like Soneva Fushi.. will just have to keep this one in mind. Sounds like something truly special. Glad you all had such a wonderful time and the villa was perfect for the kids!
